Chi assegnò il Leone d'Argento alla Mostra di Venezia del 1994 per l'interpretazione a Vanessa Redgrave (dimenticando però un mostruoso Tim Roth) poteva supporre che con quel primo film stava esordendo uno dei cineasti più importanti dell'era post scorsesiana?

Teoricamente, il primo film di James Gray è un noir: sull'anima nera di una famiglia di immigrati russi a New York, all'interno della quale non è proprio da figliol prodigo che il maggiore ritorna a casa per espletare in incognito le proprie funzioni di killer glaciale con corollario dovuto di mafia alle costole. In effetti, quest'opera prima straordinaria anche se non di certo giubilatoria rappresenta una sorta di discesa metafisica negli anfratti più oscuri di quella famiglia che dovrà poi continuare a sondare in seguito, e sempre più mirabilmente, il regista di THE YARDS, quindi di WE OWN THE NIGHT, infine di TWO LOVERS.

Una straordinaria, innevata Brighton Beach (la comunità russa di Long Island, una delle più importanti lontane da Mosca) rappresenta il primo dei soggetti di questa tragedia dalle cadenze antiche: con gli echi che denunciano la presenza poco distante di un mare che ha vissuto il lungo viaggio dei suoi abitanti. Ed è proprio grazie al taglio impeccabile di quelle atmosfere da tragedia classica al profumo di disincanto yiddish, alla precoce maestria visionaria alleata nella direzione degli attori che i temi che segneranno le opere del regista (l'ambiguità dei rapporti con il padre e la madre, la fragilità dell'amicizia, l'ineluttabilità del tradimento) già risaltano con la splendida, perversa precisione di un diamante.

Theoretically, James Gray's first film is a noir: about the black soul of a family of Russian immigrants in New York, within which it is not exactly prodigal son that the eldest returns home to carry out his duties as an ice-cold killer incognito, with due corollary of the mafia at his heels. Indeed, this extraordinary, though by no means jubilatory, debut feature represents a sort of metaphysical descent into the darkest recesses of the family that the director of THE YARDS, then WE OWN THE NIGHT, and finally TWO LOVERS will continue to probe, and ever more admirably.

An extraordinary, snowy Brighton Beach (the Russian community of Long Island, one of the most important far from Moscow) represents the first of the subjects of this tragedy with ancient cadences: with echoes that denounce the nearby presence of a sea that has experienced the long journey of its inhabitants. And it is precisely thanks to the impeccable cut of those atmospheres of classical tragedy with the scent of Yiddish disenchantment, to the precocious visionary mastery allied in the direction of the actors, that the themes that will mark the director's works (the ambiguity of relationships with father and mother, the fragility of friendship, the inevitability of betrayal) already stand out with the splendid, perverse precision of a diamond.
